Online Poker

Posted by poker bonus guru | Articles | Sunday 28 February 2010 1:58 pm

Online poker has all the advantages of online gaming. It can be played comfortably from home, without the need for formal dressing up. It is inexpensive, requiring only a computer and an Internet connection. It offers total anonymity, with your real identity being hidden by your online one.

But online poker also offers several other advantages that allow novice poker players to take up the game. Novice players find it difficult to hide their emotions. In online poker the proverbial poker face has become a non-issue because other players cannot see you. Therefore you can whoopee if you draw a full house or curse aloud if your highest card is a ten and no one will be the wiser. Also no one can catch your poker tells. So if you have the tendency to scratch your ears when you are bluffing go ahead and do so. Also you do not have to worry about deprecating looks from poker professionals if your bluff has been caught or you have wagered unwisely.

Cost wise online poker is a cheaper proposition than table poker. Since the poker casino is not involved in the play there is no house edge involved in the game. Therefore poker tables make their money through the rake, which is a percent of the pot. Online poker has lower establishment costs. There is no real infrastructure to maintain ? no expensive décor, no plush poker tables and no liveried staff. Hence online poker casinos can make do with a lower rake. Also the number of players is much more and so is the turnover. Therefore again a smaller rake enables the fixed costs to be met. A lower rake is of immense benefit to poker players because it directly translates to larger winnings.

Online poker rooms have a wide range of clientele and they have learnt to cater to them all. Special attention is paid to novice players because in time they develop into regular clients and become the mainstay of the poker casino. There are separate low stake tables for novice players to ensure that they are not milked by the poker professionals. There are a wide variety of teaching aids available on poker casinos. These include explanation of poker rules and poker strategies, interactive tutorials and demonstration games, glossary of poker terms and tips from in-house professionals.

Finally poker rooms are fun places. There is lot of live chat and interaction through bulletin boards. Poker casinos offer plenty of bonuses that go to extend your bankroll. If you ever wanted to play poker but were afraid to go to a brick and mortar casino then the online poker room is the place for you.

Little Known Secrets to Getting Free Stuff Online

Posted by poker bonus guru | Articles | Sunday 28 February 2010 1:00 pm

There may be “no free lunch” in life, but there are whole lot of free snacks and appetizers to be had if you know where to look. And Secret #1, the very first thing you need to know, is this: Not too many people read the free offers completely, and even fewer think them through critically.

Since you’re reading this article, we already know a few things about you. You have a computer (or access to one), you know how to read, you like bargains, you know how to find your way around the Internet and so forth. You also know what you want and don’t want, so telling you “how to get free stuff” will take a lot fewer words (toward the end of the article) than telling you

(1) What’s really going on in Freebie Land, and
(2) How to protect yourself against frauds and scams.

The fact is, if you use your head, you will actually get some things you need, at very low or no cost.

“Whoa!” you say. “What’s this ‘low cost’ stuff? Free is free, isn’t it?”

Good question, and you’re already up to Secret #2. Even with honest offers from reputable businesses, there may be a nominal shipping and/or handling charge. The item itself is “free” but the transaction is not. This is often the definition you will find in both print ads and online “freebie” sites, and if the value of the item exceeds the shipping cost (hopefully by a good margin) then you are still on the winning side of the deal.

Of course, well-run businesses don’t give things away without expecting something in return. Secret #3 is here to remind you that, whether you see it right away or not, there is something of value that the freebie giver gets in the transaction.

“S/H” charges and “consumables”
For a Free Vegas Poker Chip offer, for example, that “something of value” may be the difference between their unit cost (poker chip, envelope, handling time, postage, etc.) and the “nominal” shipping/handling fee of, say, $4.95. (Marketing studies have shown that consumers’ resistance to these fees kicks in at around $5 or so.) If the cost for getting one order to one customer is $2, then there’s $3 profit in every “free” chip.

There is a very popular business strategy that works well for manufacturers of inkjet printers. It’s popular, but most people do not know about it, so it comes to you now as Secret #4, the “free with purchase” strategy. When a printer is “bundled” with a computer system, the fact is that it really is “free” in the sense that you would pay the same for the system if you declined the printer. But why would Lexmark or Hewlett-Packard give you a free printer when you buy that new PC?

The printer manufacturers literally “give them away” because there is a much healthier markup on ink. Until the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) stepped in a few years ago, some manufacturers were making their printers incompatible with any ink cartridges but their own. Determining that it was a classic case of “restraint of trade,” the FTC managed to persuade inkjet printer makers to cease and desist on that part of the strategy.

You are the “item” of value
With the advent of the Internet came a whole new way of collecting information on consumers, information that is immediately useful for the seller on a case-by-case basis, and perhaps even more valuable as part of a database. Even free offers that require only an e-mail address are getting something of real value, a guaranteed-legitimate address from someone who likes bargains.

Secret #5, then, reveals what the true “value proposition” is for the freebie givers: You. That’s right, you – at least, as much of you as can be gleaned from a sign-up form. This brings another factor into the equation, which is just how broadly you want your personal information scattered across the cyber-landscape. You can get some basic anonymity with a Hotmail or Gmail account, but if you need to provide a shipping address – or credit card info for the “S/H” – then you’re literally asking for more spam, junk postal mail, even telemarketers. Sure, some claim that your information is “secure,” and some even mean it. Still …

Your info is very valuable. The more than businesses know about you, the more they can target specific sales pitches to you for things you actually buy. Now, this is a relatively free economy we have in the U.S., and information transfer makes all of the e-commerce and cyber-convenience work. Secret #6 is that you cannot avail yourself of all the freebies if you are not willing to give up some personal data. The amount and frequency of that will have to be your decision.

And now, what to do
Perhaps the least-known secret (our Secret #7) is that, while individual businesses have an incentive to inform you about their real or not-so-real freebies, they have zero incentive to tell you about any others. This means that comprehensive freebie sites, this one included, are not going to be well-funded Fortune 500 operations, as “Big Business” sees no “daylight” in the deal.

Therefore, the task of investigating, cataloging, describing and compiling lists of free offers falls to consumer groups, non-profits, community bulletin boards and individuals who believe in helping others. Some have tried to turn free-offer sites into cash machines, but as we enter the second decade of widespread Internet use no one has come up with any model for doing so.

So it really is rather a community effort, a low-level, bottom-up, grassroots kind of activity – which is Secret #8. There’s no Bill Gates, no Dell or Apple, behind freebie websites. They are usually operated as “labors of love,” often requiring the support of grateful readers to stay operating. And that brings us to Secret #9: Slow down.

Bottom line advice
The first thing you need to do, when you’re working at light speed and surfing the Web and finding some free offers that sound enticing, is slow down. Read things carefully. Think things through. Calculate comparative values (giving up info vs. getting a certain item). Don’t make rash decisions.

You know how to use Google and other search engines. You know how to write e-mails and ask questions. You know how to find freebie sites – you’re here, aren’t you? There are no “secret” freebie sites out there giving away cars and houses and cash. That’s not the help you need, and those aren’t the secrets you’re missing.

It’s all about using your head. Now that you now a bit about how the freebie sites work, and how some “free offers” really aren’t, using your head shouldn’t be a secret at all. But since we only got to #9, we’ll make it official: Secret #10 for “getting free stuff online” is, “Use your head.”

Different Online Poker Tournaments

Posted by poker bonus guru | Articles | Sunday 28 February 2010 1:00 pm

Most poker tournaments are played along the same lines — players begins with a uniform amount of chips, the blinds gradually increase as the tourney moves on and players are eliminated along the way until only one person ends up with all of the tournament chips. A large part of the cash prize pool in these tournaments goes to the top finishers but, typically, the top 10% of entrants finish in the money. Hence, if the tournament you are joining has 500 participants, you are likely to place in the money if you finish among the top 50. As a rule, most tournaments are “freezeouts,” which means that any player who loses all his chips cannot return to the tournament.

There are many tournament variants as well and the type of variant will alter the basic strategy of the tournament. Some tournaments junk the freezeout structure, escalate the blinds more quickly, introduce re-buys or have a winner-take-all structure.

The larger tournaments that have 500 or more players are usually turbo tournaments, steps tournaments or shootouts. The following are the strategies for each.

Turbo Tournaments

The turbo tournament is very fast and the blinds escalate quickly, usually after every five minutes. There have even been some turbo tourneys where the blinds rise every two minutes. Luck tends to play a larger role in this tournament than in others. There will be minimal post-flop play since players tend to be forced to go all-in pre-flop or fold. It is important to be aggressive in this type of tournament. If you are passive, the blinds will quickly use up your stack. The best strategy is to try to steal a lot of blinds and hope that Lady Luck is on your side.

Steps Tournaments

The steps tournament usually involves five steps. Winners of the early steps advance to the later rounds while losers move back a step or have to pay a new entry fee. Prizes are only awarded at the final step.

For these tournaments, it’s important to note the prize structure because some online poker rooms try to extract a lot of entry fees from participants in these steps tournaments. Look for a steps tournament that rewards players by advancing them to the next step or penalizes players by eliminating them altogether without further buy-ins. Otherwise, assume the strategy of a single-table tourney.

When about 30% of players advance to the next level, you should play a selectively aggressive game. Try to steal blinds and keep your stack above average. Remember, it’s not the guy with the most chips that advances. But you do have to retain a large chip stack to discourage others from trying to knock you out. If you succeed in stealing blinds, you will have an above-average stack and, as a result, fewer confrontations. When you reach the final step, revert back to you normal single-table tournament strategy.

Shootouts

In shootouts, which are similar to steps tournaments except that shootouts are a single event unlike steps tourneys where players that advance can decide to play the next step at a later date. The strategy in shootouts depends on the tournament structure. If only a single player advances to the next round, you must be very aggressive in your play and take plenty of risks. If several players advance, adopt a selective aggressive approach. Try to maintain a decent-size stack to discourage attacks from opponents and try to steal as many blinds as possible.

Online Poker – the Gambling Craze

Posted by poker bonus guru | Articles | Sunday 28 February 2010 1:58 am

Poker, though very popular in the gambling circuit, was headed for a premature dip in popularity with the coming of other varied slot games. Land-based casinos were doing away with poker rooms because they could not bring in enough money that its high costs demanded. Therefore land-based casinos started replacing poker rooms with slot machine games. But with the coming of the online casinos and celebrity poker on TV, poker has a fresh lease of life and since then, it has become a gambling craze.

The main reason for the craze of online poker is that land-based poker casinos are very remotely located. With online poker, you can play poker in your own room. Moreover, joining a poker table as a new player can be an intimidating experience, with people making complicated bets. This could give you the impression that playing poker is a tough thing to do. Moreover, in online poker you can choose to play at multiple tables at the same time. You only need to open them up in new windows.

Online poker casinos have sophisticated security systems which enable its personnel to look at the hand-history of a particular player. This is not possible in a land-based casino where players simply fold their hands and no one can find out the strength of their hand. Online poker security-men can also detect the IP of a player and prevent multiple players to play from the same house. They can also prevent players from playing at known proxy servers. So in online poker, you are in safe hands – another reason why more players are choosing to play online poker.

Online poker can also give you a ticket to playing real-life poker tournaments. It is often a part of promotion by online casinos to bring new players into the arena. Online poker is a mind game as well. Unlike in land-based poker rooms where you could judge the reactions and body language, online poker is based purely on your own skills and mastery over the craft. That makes the winning money even sweeter because you have earned it by skills that you have acquired, not by pure chance or by the mistakes of others.

In land based casinos there are delays in the dealing of hands and shuffling of hands. Thus the number of rounds that you can play in a certain amount of time is fixed. This puts an unnecessary ceiling on the amount of money that you can earn. In online poker, there is no such restriction. Playing in the confines of your home makes the playing even more comfortable. In online poker you can also increase your earnings by playing multiple tables, whereas in a land-based poker room, the only way you could increase your earnings was to place higher bets. The minimums in online poker are much smaller too, as compared to the rates offered by land-based casinos.

The craze of online poker has also spread like wild-fire with the lucrative bonus money offered by online poker sites. But to take advantage of that, you have to first play a certain number of raked hands. If it is not your day, these bonuses can help you break even. These would also add to your winnings when you are winning. So you have very little to lose and a lot to win, with the stakes comparatively low when you compare online poker with the other online casino games. All these reasons taken together can account a little for online poker being a gambling craze. To know the entire story, play online poker. The thrill will tell you the tales.

Women Poker Players: Our Secret Advantage at the Tables

Posted by poker bonus guru | Articles | Sunday 28 February 2010 12:59 am

This is just for the women who play poker so men go away! Seriously, you can’t read this if you’re a dude. I recommend that the male reader go to the next post right away. You don’t want your manhood being questioned because you’re reading an article written STRICTLY for women players!

Ok ladies, now that I got rid of all the men let’s talk shop. Men are an assuming bunch. We love ‘em, we hate ‘em. You know how that goes. A woman can use her female wiles to advance her poker game. Here’s why. Whenever a woman sits down at a poker table (even a virtual poker table online) the men at the table make an assumption. That assumption is usually that the woman will not be as good a poker player as the men are. They don’t give women credit for the ability to be good poker players. I guess they don’t think we can master the strategic part of the game, or maybe we just can’t grasp mathematical concepts. Maybe we lack the aggression to be good poker players. We’re just too passive by nature to be any good.

When I sit down at the poker table I prefer to think of myself as “the black widow.” Sure, I smile sheepishly at the men. I may fumble my chips awkwardly. I start up lighthearted conversations and react seemingly with awe when my male counterparts win a hand. I flirt – oh my, how I flirt! I may even show missed drawing hands that make it appear that I’m playing loose. Do not be fooled by my antics for I am weaving my web of deception, waiting for the unsuspecting male black widow to arrive (so what the hell do they call the male of their species?). I seduce the poor fellow and have my way with him. Alright!! Get your mind out of the gutter. I simply mean that I build a huge pot and he still thinks I’m the sheepish woman who couldn’t possibly play poker. And then I spring my trap. I push in a huge bet knowing I have the nuts. What’s the poor guy to do? He’s pretty much pot committed and he can’t lose face in front of his male cronies. He calls my bet and I flip over the nuts and rake in a big pot. Another one bites the dust! Hey, maybe I should act surprised here and say I thought you had me beat – that sure was scary. And so it goes.

I’ve actually been sitting at a poker table playing with the guys and they nudge me under the table to let me know I should get out of the hand. Aside from the fact this isn’t fair to the other players – I do appreciate their protective nature sometimes. I notice sometimes that guys will try to teach me the game and show me their hands at the end of play. It all works in my favor. I’m making mental notes fast and furiously.

A woman poker player should work to develop her bag of tricks. Among these should be her black widow routine, playing the dumb blonde and flirting with the enemy. Poker is about developing a winning edge. Deception is built into the game. The next time you sit down at a table full of men, realize that most if not all of them will be judging you incorrectly until you prove them wrong.

A funny thing happens after the guys catch on to you. They start believing you every time you push your chips into the pot. This makes for some wonderful opportunities to steal the pot!

Ain’t it great being a woman? Just be sure to keep it between us, ok.
