Bluffing at Poker

Bluffing….Look, I’m no expert, but I read a lot…and this is the advice wot I have read.

Basically, in a long handed game, say 7 or more players, you really don’t need to bluff. This is because with so many players, someone is almost bound to have a hand that beats yours, and is also prepared to call your bluff. So only play strong hands. This is incredibly boring, as it means you play about one hand in 12, and on a bad day, you might not play a hand for well over half an hour at a time. This only play good hands strategy isn’t original or interesting, but it is effective because for some reason I can’t understand, few other players stick to it, and few adjust their play to allow for your rock-like credentials.

It’s still a good idea to bluff sometimes, the idea isn’t really to win anything out of it, but almost to get caught bluffing. If you do this people will say “Ah, that C.M. , he’s a bit of a bluffer”. This means that the next time you play a hand, even if its a pair of AAs, people will say “Ah, that C.M. , he’s a bit of a bluffer” etc. Hopefully they will raise against your bet on your impossibly strong hand, & you clean up. Well that’s the idea anyway. I think it’s probably best not to bluff more often that once in every 10 or so hands that you play. That’s a guess. I don’t know for sure. As you’re only playing 1 in 12 hands, that means you bluff about once every blue moon. But you get the idea.

In short handed games esp with 3 or less, then you need to bluff a lot. In this sense, it means raising loads in order to convince your opponent that you have a strong hand. Strangely, because there are only a few players, if you have almost any hand of any quality it probably is stronger anyway. This tendancy to raise a lot in short handed games makes them very aggrressive, so pref. should be avoided by the likes of us. They’re difficult to win, unless you really have a feel for the game, which takes time. I’ll give it another year for my ability LOL!

Because of all this, when selecting tables, the thing I most look out for is full tables. They’re easier for beginners.

The way I see it, in limit poker there are only two good times to bluff, the semi-bluff when you have a four flush or open ended straight.In other words you have the worst hand, but a very good chance of making the best hand. Sometimes you have both , with 15 cards that can make your hand.I particularly like having a pair and the flush draw. Of course if it’s the top pair, you are not bluffing. The other time to bluff is the position bluff, when you are last or second last and everyone has checked. I prefer to do this after the turn card, too many players will call after the flop with over cards, and the bigger bet on the turn discourages callers. Remember they have no idea what you have, in their mind you could have slow-played a set, or have made a set or two pair on the turn. Some poor players can’t be bluffed, so it’s a good idea to know if this type player is in the hand.Just the other day, I saw a bluffer called , and the caller couldn’t even beat an ace high, which of course what the bettor had..

If you play low limit against more players, then do not bluff or very rarely, because there are players who never fold. If there are 1-2 opponents only, then of course you have to bluff, when you feel your opponents do not have good cards. If the pot is large, then the bluffing is bad idea, because if the players fold, then they lose lot of money, so some of them will call. If the pot is small, then the bluff can be good. (I’m quite good low limit Hold’em player.)

When you’re making your move, do everything you can to appear as normal as you do on any other hand.

Deception is one element of poker. That is why it is considered as a very essential trick in holdem poker. The reason in bluffing is to make your opponents believe that you have a better hand when you actually do not. Players who believed you will then fold and leave you to win the pot. Do it aggressively if you are going to bluff. A bluff that appears weak may not be effective.

A small bet at a large pot isn’t likely to make someone fold a decent hand. Bet hard, but not so hard that you will be committing more than you are willing to fold away. If the board comes up looking scary for premium hands (7-8-9 for instance, or three of the same suit), bet it hard. If they call you, they likely caught a piece of that draw, but if they have a high pair, or AK without that suit being involved, that board will scare them.

Straight and flush draws are AA’s worst enemy; play into that fear. Players who tend to fold easily are the biggest targets of a bluff. Bets that will be put out will serve as a form of information gathering on this player’s hand.

Poker Bluffing – Do you Know Why It’s Not So Effective Online?

There are significant differences between poker bluffing in a live game and online.

In fact, bluffing is much more effective offline due to the environment the game is played in.

A bluff can be defined simply as a bet or raise made with a hand that has no real chance of winning.

The purpose of course, is to win a pot when your hand is not strong enough to do so on it’s own. You are really trying to deceive your opponent you have a good hand when in reality you have junk.

Bluffing tends to be more effective in real games than online.

One of the biggest mistakes of online poker players is their eagerness to bluff too often.

Fact: Players tend to bluff more in online games.

In live games, bluffing needs a calm emotionless exterior and a willingness to look stupid in public if the bluff fails. On the other hand, online players do not have to face other players and can hide.

Many novice players in particular love the thrill of the bluff.

After all they have seen it in all the big movies and James Bond do it, so they want to try it out!

They therefore have more inclination and courage and bluff more often, than an experienced player.

It’s easier to place your chips

The internet makes it easier to commit chips to try a bluff.

If a player wants to bluff, he simply clicks the mouse and it’s done.

It’s not so simple in a live game, where a player has to move their chips under the watchful gaze of other players.

Many players online therefore commit “virtual” chips for bluffing easier than they would in a live game.

Players may not spot your bluff at all

Because players are in a virtual world, they may simply not see you bluffing at all.

Many players play multiple games, tend to be easily distracted as their not sat at a table (i.e they can be doing other things) and of course, they don’t see your face.

Finally, online games can have a higher turnover of players who know nothing about how you are playing the game.

The fact that online players are more likely to call your bluff affects your bluffing strategy online in two ways:

1. You can be more aggressive with good or even average hands, because there is a good chance that your opponent could be bluffing and you can use strong hands to wipe them out.

2. Your personal strategy should be to bluff less online than you would in a live game. Other opponents realize that there is more bluffing online and as consequence (and the fact they feel braver) are more inclined to call your bluffs.

This leads to an obvious conclusion in terms of games to play: online.

Avoid Low Limit Games.

For an extra dollar or two, there is someone who will want to call you as the risk is low.

Players on low limit tables also tend to stay in if they have caught even a piece of the flop such as a lowish pair. Trying to bluff here won’t work as they will call up to the river.

Focus on limit games

Bluffing works better in no limit games simply because there is more at stake and the size of your bankroll in relation to your opponents is more important.

While we know bluffing is more difficult online than in a live game, the above two factors make bluffing an effective strategy for experienced players, providing it is used wisely.

Poker psychology comes into play much more and with bigger pots.

Players tend to consider their options more and will tend to be more focused on the game and less inclined to keep calling your bluff for any reason, simply because it doesn’t cost them much.

Stick to no limit games and bluff sparingly only when the circumstances are right.

The object of bluffing is to make the other player believe that you have the best hand, so they will fold and you can collect the winnings. Sounds easy doesn’t it? Right, well if it were that easy, there would be no point in learning strategies or even playing poker, or any other gambling game for that matter.

On the other hand, knowing when to fold is just as important, if not more important than knowing when to bluff. Admitting defeat and folding your cards is how you stay in the game, and maintain control over your money. In the long run it is a far wiser move to fold, than get suckered into a bluffing battle of pride. Remember – leave your emotions out of the game!

That being said, knowing how to maximize your gain and minimize your losses is all part and parcel of knowing when to check, bet, call, raise and fold. For example, if you wish to minimize your loss, it is a good idea to fold early in the game if you do not have a strong starting hand. Likewise, if you know you have a strong hand – possibly even the best – the longer you stay in the hand, the more opportunity you have of getting the other players to add more money to the pot, thus maximizing your potential winnings.

It sounds easy to play by these rules, but when it comes to actually playing the hand, you will discover that analyzing your cards and determining their worth in the grand scheme of the game, is something that will come with practice. To help you with this concept begin by asking yourself the following –

“Do I currently have the best hand in relation to the number of players, the player’s poker personalities, as well as in terms of the betting that has occurred in the current round and in possible pervious ones?”

Asking yourself these questions will assist you in your decision to determine if you believe your hand has favorable odds in being the best on the river. It also means that you must take into consideration the chance that your hand could be overtaken in the River. If you believe your hand could be the best, at this point in time it is generally a good idea to check raise (check when you are able and raise when bet into) and observe the other actions of the remaining players. If you find that your hand isn’t strong enough, it is good idea check folds (check if you are able and fold when you are bet into).

Above all, remember that the last thing you want is to be one of the suckers with a weak hand who end up getting pulled too far into the hand. This will not only make you predictable to the other players, but will cost you all of your chips in no time. This is the mistake which many novice poker players make, which is what sets them apart from advanced players who spend less time focusing on winning every hand, and concentrate only on those hands they know they can win and maximize to their full potential.

Finally, never forget that the greatest strategy you could ever apply to your poker game is to learn how to think for yourself and trust your instincts.
